Like a Prayer is an exploration of processing grief, trauma and anxiety through faith, prayer, and graphic design. All artwork is inspired by illustrations from my church notes, personal journal, and grief counseling. I’ve lost so many loved ones in such a short amount of time that I’ve had to navigate being in different stages of grief at the same time. Some dating all the way back to 2009, this body of work explores the juxtaposition of joy and sorrow that God has carried me through, what the different stages of grief mean at different times of our lives, and it ends with an invitation for others to share their grief journey. I’m designing a space for lament in a world that doesn’t offer that to us enough. The call to action will be to admit when we need to slow down and to take a break. To go to counseling if we need it, and to be more transparent about our secret battles so that others feel safe in sharing their stories with us in return, and to remember to pray. Through telling this story with art and design, I hope to inspire a message of comfort and joy to anyone else who’s lost a loved one or is dealing with grief in other forms.
